Eating Out in York on the Low FODMAP Diet: My Favourite Finds

I recently spent a few days in York and was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to find delicious Low FODMAP-friendly food. From cosy brunch spots to pizza places and even sushi, there were plenty of great options that didn’t leave me feeling unwell. Here's a round-up of my favourite food spots from the trip—tried and tested while sticking to the Low FODMAP diet.

Cresci Pizzeria

This sourdough pizza place was a real gem. Their base sauce had no onion or garlic, which is such a treat when you’re used to avoiding it! The crust was crisp, the toppings were fresh, and it didn’t leave me feeling bloated or uncomfortable.

Italian Food in York

Italian food is often a great option on the Low FODMAP diet, especially carbonara, which traditionally doesn’t include garlic or onion.

  • Little Italy York served up a delicious carbonara and had gluten-free pasta available too.

  • Delrios also did a proper carbonara and were really helpful with dietary needs.

Ipfu Japanese Restaurant

Sushi is a great Low FODMAP choice when dining out, and Ipfu did not disappoint. The food was light, fresh, and beautifully presented. I had a really tasty and symptom-free meal here—definitely worth a visit!

Brew & Brownie

One of the best breakfasts I had during the trip. I ordered scrambled eggs on toast, and it was genuinely the richest, creamiest scrambled eggs I’ve ever eaten, served on ridiculously tasty sourdough bread. A lovely spot to start the day.

They also had gluten free cakes available.

Double Dutch Pancake House

A great place to visit for a treat, delicious pancakes and gluten free options available.

Partisan

I went to Partisan for brunch and it was excellent. I had poached eggs on sourdough toast, and everything was cooked beautifully. The atmosphere was relaxed and the cakes and pastries on display looked amazing. The staff were also really helpful about dietary questions.

Bruks

Ideal for a simple, comforting lunch. I had a jacket potato—a classic Low FODMAP choice—and the staff were brilliant about food intolerances and allergies. The iced coffees looked very tempting too!

Cosgriff & Sons Microbakery

I picked up a sourdough loaf and some sourdough hot cross buns here—hands down some of the best I’ve ever had. Full of flavour and perfectly baked. This place is a real hidden gem for bread lovers.

House of the Trembling Madness

This was such a fun spot! A proper pub with character, a great atmosphere, and an attached shop where I found some fantastic alcohol-free beers. They also had gluten-free options, which was a nice bonus. Definitely worth popping into if you're in the area.

Helpful Tips for Eating Low FODMAP in York:

  • Email or call ahead – I found it helpful to contact restaurants in advance to ask about ingredients. Most were happy to help and it took the stress out of ordering on the spot.

  • Speak up – Don’t be afraid to explain your needs. Most places were really accommodating and understanding.

  • Sourdough is your friend – It’s often easier to digest and several places offered great quality sourdough.

  • Pack snacks – I always bring a few homemade oat bars or biscuits with me in case options are limited.
